THE FUNDAMENTALS OF DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY
OVERVIEW
Bloomsbury commissioned a full layout and production design for Fundamentals of Digital Photography, a comprehensive guide aimed at beginner-to-intermediate photographers. The brief required a clear, intuitive visual structure that balanced dense instructional content with imagery across a long-form print format.
STRATEGY
The design approach centred on creating a calm, structured reading experience. Typography, spacing, and hierarchy were carefully considered to make technical content accessible. Images were treated as teaching tools, guiding readers step-by-step through photographic concepts. A unified system ensured consistency across chapters, maintaining cohesion despite varying topics and writing styles.
OUTPUT
I delivered the full book layout from first chapter to final proofs, typesetting the text, constructing page templates, and implementing a hierarchy that balanced instructional content with photography. I prepared all imagery for print, including colour correction and technical adjustments, and worked closely with the copywriter to refine copy flow, resolve structural issues, and ensure precision and clarity throughout the text. The final production-ready files were handed over to Bloomsbury for print.
IMPACT
The resulting book provided a clear, structured, and visually engaging learning experience. Text and imagery were seamlessly integrated, elevating Bloomsbury’s educational portfolio and empowering readers to develop confidence in both the theory and practice of digital photography.
